What's Immersion Cooling?

Also known as liquid submersion cooling. It is the practice of submerging computer components (or full servers) in a thermally, but not electrically, conductive liquid (dielectric coolant) allowing higher heat transfer performance than air and many other benefits.

Immersion cooling refers to the process of immersing servers, GPUs, ASICs, and other IT hardware in a non-conductive fluid. The fluid is a far more effective cooling medium than air is and so higher efficiencies are achievable. Two-phase immersion cooling is similar but the fluid boils on the hot components.

Why many large data centers have already moved or are considering the move to immersion cooling?

1. Save floor space. Compare with traditional forced air cooling way(using precision air conditioner), immersion cooling system will save much floor space. Because no need rack system and no need air conditioner indoor.

2. Save power. Compare with traditional forced air cooling way(using precision air conditioner), immersion cooling system will save much power. For example, no need to install many air conditioners indoor, then no compressor power consumption. For example, the bitcoin miners no need air cooling fans. Thesewill save power around 18~25%.

3. Increase hardware lifepan. In immersion, machines operate in a 100% controlled environment with no dust, no temperature of humidity fluctuations, no impurities. This will extend the service life of the mining machine or server. This will also reduce machine maintainance fee.
